What is an MCP server?
MCP (Model Context Protocol) is an open standard for connecting AI assistants to data and tools that live outside them. Anthropic introduced it in November 2024 and released it as open source.
Before it, every assistant needed a purpose-built connector for every data source. MCP replaces that with one protocol: an MCP server exposes the data, an MCP client talks to it on the assistant's behalf, and the two exchange JSON-RPC messages. It is often described as a USB-C port for AI applications - one socket instead of a drawer full of adapters.
It is not tied to a single vendor. OpenAI adopted it in March 2025 and Google DeepMind followed, and in December 2025 Anthropic handed the protocol to the Agentic AI Foundation under the Linux Foundation.
